GitHub recommends Claude Opus 5.5 following the retirement of Claude Opus 4.7
The recommended replacement for Claude Opus 4.7 in GitHub Copilot is Claude Opus 5.5; the original announcement listed Claude Opus 5. The retirement of four models takes effect on 2 October 2026 across all environments of the service.
In the current announcement, GitHub lists Claude Opus 5.5 as the recommended replacement for Claude Opus 4.7. This corrects the earlier information: the original announcement recommended Claude Opus 5.
As of 2 October 2026, GitHub retired four models from all GitHub Copilot environments: Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code and Claude Opus 4.7. The change covers Copilot Chat, the inline edits and code completions features, and the ask and agent modes. The recommended replacement for both Gemini models is Gemini 3.8 Flash, and for Kimi K2.7 Code it is Kimi K3.
According to GitHub, users should adjust their workflows and integrations to use supported models. Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable replacement models through access policies; the original announcement also mentioned this possibility for Copilot Business. Once enabled, availability can be checked in the model picker in Copilot Chat. Removing the retired models requires no action.
Why it matters
Users of retired models need to change their model selections in workflows and integrations. The correction to the recommended replacement matters for the transition from Claude Opus 4.7. In companies, the transition may also require changes to access policies so that employees can use the replacement models.
