GitHub is fixing agent activity reporting in GitHub Copilot metrics

clearly official source

IDE updates are expected to restore accurate reporting of GitHub Copilot agent activity. The fix is available in Visual Studio Code from version 1.139.0; GitHub expects it for other IDEs by November 2026. Missing activity cannot be recovered retroactively.

GitHub announced a fix for a bug in reporting agent activity in GitHub Copilot. According to the company, agent sessions in some IDEs did not pass along the source IDE identifier after switching to Copilot SDK. As a result, most affected activity was missing from reports, while some was counted as Copilot CLI activity. The bug affects only versions that use Copilot SDK for agent mode; activity from earlier versions continues to be counted.

The fix is available in Visual Studio Code from version 1.139.0. For Visual Studio, the company expects it in version 18.12 in October 2026, and for JetBrains IDEs, in the next extension release by the end of October. For Eclipse and Xcode, it is expected in the next extension releases by November 2026. These are expected timelines, not confirmed availability.

According to the company, after an update to a fixed version, subsequent agent activity is once again counted in the usage metrics dashboard and through the API. However, missing activity cannot be recovered retroactively. The company is also expanding its use of server data to count active users; details about code changes and accepted suggestions still depend on data sent from the editor.

What changed

Why it matters

If dashboards showed a decline in reported agent activity while usage of the service was growing, that decline may have been caused by a data collection bug. The IDE versions used by developers therefore matter when evaluating adoption. Updates will restore reporting of subsequent activity, but will not close the historical gap.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

A developer using an affected version may have incomplete or incorrectly attributed agent activity in their personal dashboards. Installing a fixed version will restore the counting of subsequent work.

What to do If you use an affected version of Visual Studio Code, update to version 1.139.0 or later.

02

For a business

Team and enterprise dashboards may undercount agent usage and overcount Copilot CLI activity. Administrators must account for the unrecoverable gap in the data and the timing of IDE updates when assessing usage.
