GitHub has made sensitive content exclusions available in the Copilot app and CLI tools
GitHub has made content exclusions available (GA) in the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI. Files excluded by administrators at the enterprise, organization, or repository level will not be used as AI context. Available for Copilot Business and Enterprise.
GitHub has made content exclusions generally available in the GitHub Copilot app and in Copilot CLI. These tools now respect content exclusion rules configured by administrators at the enterprise, organization, or individual repository level.
According to GitHub, Copilot will not use excluded files as context for AI, which is intended to help protect sensitive code in agentic workflows as well – scenarios where Copilot works more autonomously through the app or command line, rather than only as an extension in an editor.
The feature is available to customers with Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise subscriptions. Details can be found in the source article.
Why it matters
Security and compliance teams at companies using Copilot Business or Enterprise can now rely on their configured rules for protecting sensitive code (e.g. proprietary algorithms or files containing secret keys) also applying in the new channels through which Copilot works more autonomously – the standalone app and command line – as well as in the IDE integration, where this protection was previously available.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers working with the Copilot app or CLI tools in an organization with content exclusion rules configured will find that Copilot will not use the contents of excluded files as context for suggestions.
For a business
Companies using Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise can now enforce protection for sensitive code in agentic workflows run through the app and CLI as well as in the IDE integration, reducing the risk of sensitive data entering the AI context.
