GitHub has made improvements to Copilot code review available with clearer summaries and automatic resolution
GitHub has made improvements to Copilot code review available — clearer summaries of findings, smarter automatic resolution of comments, and automatic commit message generation when accepting suggestions. The features are now generally available.
GitHub announced that improvements to Copilot code review are now generally available. The overview comment on a pull request now displays the current assessment of the review status, the effort level used by Copilot to conduct the review, and a summary of the comments raised. Findings are grouped, and those arising from a newly added commit are marked with the “new” label. According to the company, the overview retains review progress across subsequent commits and requests for another review, while the previous summaries of the pull request and individual files also remain available.
Each Copilot code review comment now has a short title describing the issue found; these titles also appear in the list of findings in the overview comment, which the company says should make prioritization easier. The ability of Copilot to automatically resolve its own comments has also been improved — the system can now determine from subsequent commits whether a comment has been addressed, or mark it as “Won't Fix” or “Incorrect”.
The final new feature is automatic commit message generation: when a user accepts a full batch of applicable Copilot code review suggestions, the tool generates a relevant commit title and optionally a description based on the selected changes, according to the company. This feature also works with batches that include comments from sources other than Copilot.
Why it matters
Development teams using pull requests on GitHub with Copilot code review enabled get clearer tracking of review status across commits and less manual work sorting resolved comments and writing commit messages. The source does not specify a price or specific availability conditions beyond general availability.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers using Copilot code review will see a clearer summary of findings by effort level and will not need to manually handle comments resolved by previous commits or write commit messages when accepting suggestions in bulk.
For a business
Companies using GitHub Copilot for code review can reduce the time spent manually sorting comments and writing commit messages, because the tool now maintains an overview of findings across commits and generates commit messages automatically.
