GitHub extends the HydraFusion research preview to Visual Studio Code and the GitHub Copilot app
The HydraFusion research preview is now available in Visual Studio Code and the GitHub Copilot app. It coordinates multiple models and supports the Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise plans. Company access requires an admin to enable preview features.
GitHub has extended the HydraFusion research preview beyond the Copilot CLI tool to Visual Studio Code and the GitHub Copilot app. HydraFusion appears in the model picker, but it is not a standalone model: it coordinates multiple models. According to GitHub, it selects a workflow based on their capabilities with the goal of achieving the desired quality in the most efficient way possible.
Access is available to users on the Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise plans. In Visual Studio Code, version 1.140 or newer is supported, as well as VS Code Insiders; the chat.copilot.hydraFusion.enabled setting is used to turn it on. For Copilot Business and Enterprise plans, an admin must enable preview features in the organization or enterprise settings. HydraFusion remains a research preview and may change.
Why it matters
Developers with a supported plan can try multi-model coordination directly in Visual Studio Code or the GitHub Copilot app. Companies can control access through preview feature settings; when rolling it out into development, they must account for the fact that the research preview's behavior may change.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
If you're using a supported plan, you can try HydraFusion directly in Visual Studio Code or the GitHub Copilot app, without switching to the Copilot CLI tool.
For a business
Rolling out HydraFusion to development teams on Copilot Business and Enterprise plans depends on an admin enabling preview features. The company thus decides on access to the research preview, whose behavior may change.
