GitHub Copilot introduces a generally available feature for requesting increases to AI credit budgets
GitHub has made a feature generally available that lets organization members request a budget increase immediately after exhausting their AI credits in GitHub Copilot instead of having their access blocked; administrators approve requests directly in the settings. Available for Business and Enterprise plans.
GitHub has made the feature for requesting an increase to the AI credit budget in GitHub Copilot generally available (GA). Previously, an organization member who exhausted their allocated AI credits was blocked from Copilot features that consume credits. The new feature instead allows them to submit a request for a budget increase as soon as they reach the limit.
An administrator — an organization owner, enterprise account owner, or billing manager — sees requests in the “Requests from members" section of their settings, can set a new amount for each, and can approve, modify, or reject the request without leaving the administration interface. Requests are automatically routed to the account that pays for the budget: requests against a budget owned by an organization appear in the organization settings, while requests against a budget owned by an enterprise account appear in the enterprise settings. According to GitHub, approving a request immediately updates the member's budget to the specified amount and restores their access to credits.
According to the source, the feature is available under the GitHub Copilot Business and GitHub Copilot Enterprise plans with usage-based billing.
Why it matters
For individual GitHub Copilot users, this means less disruption to work after exhausting their credits — instead of waiting for a manual resolution, they can immediately request an increase and continue after approval. For organizations and enterprise accounts on Business and Enterprise plans, it provides a tool to centralize and speed up approval of additional spending on AI credits without having to handle each case outside the administration interface, making it easier to control usage-based billing costs.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
A GitHub Copilot user who exhausts their allocated AI credits is no longer automatically cut off from features that depend on credits, but can immediately request a budget increase and continue working after approval.
For a business
Organization or enterprise account administrators (owners, billing managers) get an overview of requests from members in the GitHub Copilot settings and can approve, modify, or reject them without leaving the administration interface, simplifying the management of spending on AI credits.
