GitHub Copilot gets a validator for checking enterprise managed settings

clearly official source

GitHub has added an in-product validator to GitHub Copilot that checks enterprise managed settings configuration files – it detects malformed JSON, unsupported settings, and invalid team mappings.

GitHub has released a new in-product validator for enterprise managed settings in GitHub Copilot. The tool detects malformed JSON, unsupported configurations, invalid team mappings, and other errors that could prevent company policies from being properly enforced.

The validation covers the copilot/managed-settings.json, copilot/team-mappings.json files, and all team settings files referenced by team-mappings.json. Results and detected errors are displayed in the "Copilot settings validation" section on the enterprise AI controls page, with each issue including a link to the specific file and the JSON path to the error.

According to the source, after fixing an error it is necessary to commit the change to the default branch of the .github-private repository, reload the Agents page, and check the validator's results to confirm that the configuration is valid.

What changed

Why it matters

Companies managing GitHub Copilot through centralized enterprise settings previously had to discover errors in configuration JSON files only when they noticed that policies were not being enforced correctly. The validator makes it possible to find and fix the specific error (file and JSON path) before it manifests as a security or compliance problem.

Relevant practical impact

What this means

01

For a business

GitHub Enterprise administrators can now verify directly in the product that the managed-settings.json and team-mappings.json files are valid and that policies for Copilot are actually enforced as intended, which reduces the risk of unintentionally non-functional company policies.
