GitHub Copilot: general availability of Lite and Balanced levels of detail for code review

clearly official source

GitHub has made the Lite and Balanced levels of detail for GitHub Copilot code review generally available (GA) – they allow the depth of pull request reviews to be chosen based on complexity. Available in the Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans; admins can set a default level for the entire organization.

GitHub announced the general availability of two levels of detail for code review using GitHub Copilot: Lite and Balanced. These levels allow the depth of pull request analysis to be tailored to its complexity and risk – according to GitHub, documentation edits and minor fixes need only focused feedback, while complex logic, security-sensitive code and changes across services benefit from deeper analysis.

These are renamed versions of the levels labeled Low and Medium in public preview – they are now called Lite and Balanced. According to GitHub, previously configured levels will automatically carry over under the new names. Both levels are available in the Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans.

When requesting a code review, users can choose Lite for routine changes or Balanced for larger, more complex or sensitive changes; this choice applies only to that specific review and does not change the default settings for the repository or organization. Organization administrators can set a default effort level that applies to all repositories in the organization – repositories without their own setting then inherit this default value from organization settings → Copilot → Copilot code review.

Copilot code review now also indicates which effort level was used, both in timeline events and in the pull request summary comment, making it possible to track review depth across repositories at a glance.

What changed

Why it matters

Choosing the review depth allows teams to save time and computing resources on routine pull requests (Lite) and focus more thorough analysis where it really matters – on complex or security-sensitive code (Balanced). The ability to set a default level at the organization level also gives administrators a tool for standardizing reviews across all repositories without having to rely on the individual choice of each developer.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

Each time developers request a code review from GitHub Copilot, they can choose the depth of analysis based on the nature of the change, allowing them to get faster feedback on minor edits and a more thorough examination of complex or risky code.

What to do When requesting a code review in Copilot, choose Lite for routine changes or Balanced for more complex and security-sensitive code.

02

For a business

Companies using GitHub Copilot for code review can now centrally set the default depth of automated review for the entire organization, which affects the consistency and scope of reviews across repositories without requiring action from individual developers.
