GitHub Copilot: automations can now be triggered by a comment on an issue or pull request
GitHub has enabled Copilot cloud agent automations to be triggered by a comment containing predefined text on an issue or pull request. Available for Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise, with administrator approval required for business plans.
GitHub has expanded Copilot with the ability to trigger cloud agent automations based on comments. An automation can now be configured to run when a comment containing specified text is created on an issue or pull request. The text that should trigger the automation is entered during configuration. Setup takes place in the repository through the Agents tab and the Automations item in the sidebar.
The feature is available to existing users of Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise. For Business and Enterprise, an administrator must first enable automations by turning on the Copilot cloud agent policy.
The source article also mentioned common use cases, but without a specific list. Details can be found in the source article.
Why it matters
Developers can thus replace manually triggering repetitive tasks (e.g. through the command line or by manually instructing an agent) with a simple comment containing agreed-upon text directly in the discussion on an issue or pull request. For teams on Business and Enterprise plans, this also means that introducing the feature requires approval and configuration by an administrator, which affects how quickly they can deploy automations in repositories.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
A developer with a Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max subscription can set up an automation that runs as soon as they write predefined text in a comment on an issue or pull request, saving them from manually triggering repetitive tasks.
For a business
Organizations with Copilot Business or Enterprise must first have an administrator enable the feature through the cloud agent policy, which adds an extra step when introducing automation for developer workflows in repositories.
