Former OpenAI employee faces charge of installing a listening device
US federal prosecutors charged Abdulrahman Alfozan with bugging an OpenAI meeting room. According to prosecutors, he used an AI chatbot and an internal tool to find meeting times while planning his actions.
Former OpenAI employee Abdulrahman Alfozan faces one count of using a device to intercept oral communications. According to prosecutors, he placed a listening device in a meeting room used by company leadership for discussions involving highly confidential information. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison. OpenAI fired him in connection with his arrest.
According to prosecutors, Alfozan spent several weeks planning his actions through queries to an unspecified AI chatbot and a tool described as a “productivity agent”. He allegedly used an internal OpenAI tool to identify meetings in the targeted room. According to a court filing, he also apparently used an account associated with his wife to ask technical questions about preparing a concealed recording device.
OpenAI discovered the listening device on 30 September during a sweep for listening devices. According to the charge, it was hidden in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port on the back of a television. The security team could not read the stored data because it was encrypted and later, according to prosecutors, found another device that had not been installed in a bag belonging to Alfozan. The company said it has so far found no signs that he gained unauthorized access to model weights, source code or customer data, or stole any of them. The motive has not been established.
Why it matters
A listening device in a room used for leadership meetings could put confidential information about research, products and business strategy at risk. The discovery of the device establishes that a security incident occurred, but its contents could not be read; the extent of any information captured therefore remains unclear. The role of AI in the planning is an allegation made by prosecutors.
