Anthropic has added a feature to Claude Code on macOS and Linux that allows individual sessions to send text messages to each other and share context. Instead of manually copying information between terminals, Claude can send a text summary to another session. According to Anthropic, communication works in both directions – a user can ask another session a question and receive an answer directly, and Claude can also send a message on its own, for example if a change it has made affects work in another session.
The documentation lists typical use cases: sharing findings, coordinating parallel workflows, and checking the status of long-running tasks.
Communication works differently depending on whether the sessions are on one computer or multiple computers. On one computer, it takes place locally. Between different computers, it is routed through Anthropic servers, and in this case only replies are possible. Administrators can restrict the feature in the settings. The feature is not available on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry.
Why it matters
The feature reduces manual copying of information between terminals when working in parallel with multiple Claude Code sessions and allows them to coordinate their work or report the status of long-running tasks. For companies, what matters is that communication between different computers passes through Anthropic servers and can be restricted in the settings, and that the feature is not yet available on the enterprise platforms Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Users working in parallel in multiple terminals with Claude Code can now let sessions communicate directly with each other instead of manually copying context, including having a session send them a message on its own if a change it makes affects the work of another session.
For a business
Administrators can restrict communication between sessions in the settings, which is relevant to company security policy because communication between different computers passes through Anthropic servers.
