Bot detection startup Spur Intelligence raised 200 million dollars from Insight Partners
Cybersecurity startup Spur Intelligence, focused on bot detection, received an investment of 200 million dollars from Insight Partners. According to Cloudflare, bots on the internet have surpassed human traffic for the first time in history.
Cybersecurity startup Spur Intelligence, based in Lake Mary, Florida, raised a funding round of 200 million dollars, led by Insight Partners. Spur was founded in 2017 by two former engineers from the US Department of Defense, five years before the public launch of ChatGPT. The technology developed by the company helps businesses distinguish real human users from increasingly well-hidden bot traffic and thereby identify fake users and security threats.
Thomas Krane from Insight Partners said in a statement that as sophisticated criminal VPN networks, residential proxy networks and anonymization infrastructure proliferate, organizations increasingly face situations where they can see activity but not the infrastructure behind it.
According to a report from Cloudflare published last month, by mid-2026 bots were more active on the internet than humans for the first time in history. Cloudflare founder and CEO Matthew Prince wrote on X that he had expected this moment no earlier than the end of 2027, or possibly the beginning of 2027, but agent traffic is growing so quickly that bots have already overtaken human traffic online.
Why it matters
The news shows the growing commercial importance of tools for distinguishing human and automated traffic at a time when, according to Cloudflare, bots on the internet have overtaken human users for the first time. For companies managing online services or e-commerce, or for security teams, this means growing pressure to invest in detecting fake traffic, hidden proxy networks and agentic bots so they can distinguish real customers from automated threats.

What this means
For a business
The investment confirms growing demand for tools that detect bot traffic and hidden infrastructure (VPNs, residential proxy networks) at a time when, according to Cloudflare, bots have surpassed human traffic for the first time in the history of the internet – this increases pressure on companies managing online services to address protection against fake users and fraud.
