Backflip AI released a second model for converting 3D scans into parametric CAD models
Backflip AI has released a second AI model that converts 3D scans and mesh files into editable parametric CAD models (extrusions, revolutions) instead of triangular meshes. It runs as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion, with 4 scans free, then $20/month. The company has $30 million in funding.
Backflip AI has released its second AI model for generating CAD data. The model converts 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable parametric CAD models. This process usually requires considerable time and extensive CAD expertise; according to Backflip AI, the model reduces it to just minutes.
Unlike earlier AI models, which generated only triangular surface meshes, the model from Backflip AI produces actual CAD operations, such as extrusions and revolutions. The resulting models therefore remain easy to edit. The tool works as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion.
The first four reconstructions are free, and paid plans then start at $20 per month. The startup Backflip AI has been operating since December 2024 and has $30 million in funding. According to CEO Greg Mark, factories have digital models for less than one percent of their parts, and digitizing components is particularly important in the automotive and aerospace industries when prototyping and designing new parts.
Why it matters
Manually converting a scanned physical part into an editable CAD model usually requires an expert and hours of work; according to the company, the tool reduces this step to minutes, and the output remains editable as a regular CAD model, rather than just a mesh of triangles. This matters primarily to companies in the automotive and aerospace industries, where digital models are missing for the vast majority of existing parts and digitizing them is necessary for prototyping and designing new components.

Backflip AI (druhý model pro generování CAD dat)
Backflip AI
- Inputs
- input: 3D scans and mesh files; output: parametric CAD models with operations such as extrusions and revolutions
- Price
- $20/month after using up 4 free reconstructions
- Availability
- add-in for Autodesk Fusion
- digitizing physical parts into editable CAD models
- prototyping and designing new parts in the automotive and aerospace industries
- reverse engineering scanned components for further editing in Fusion
- after using up 4 free reconstructions, payment is required, starting at $20/month
- works only as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion
Unlike earlier AI models, which generated only triangular surface meshes, this model produces actual CAD operations (extrusions, revolutions), so the result remains easy to edit.

Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
CAD designers and engineers working on reverse engineering can convert 3D scans of physical parts into editable parametric CAD models directly in Autodesk Fusion, instead of spending hours manually remodeling them.
For a business
Manufacturing companies in the automotive and aerospace industries can use the tool to digitize parts that still lack a digital model—according to CEO Greg Mark, this includes more than 99 % of parts in a typical factory—at a price starting at $20/month after four free reconstructions.
