AWS describes a fused MoE optimization for the NVIDIA Hopper architecture
The AWS blog describes an optimization of fused MoE for the Amazon SageMaker AI service. According to the company, transposing matrices is intended to improve utilization of GPUs based on the NVIDIA Hopper architecture during generation, when small token counts do not fill the fixed dimension of WGMMA instructions.
AWS published a technical procedure for optimizing fused MoE for the Amazon SageMaker AI service. Fused MoE combines token routing, data transfers and expert computation into a single batched operation on the GPU. According to the company, this fusion offers latency benefits but complicates implementation and tuning; efficient GPU utilization requires adjustments for the specific hardware.
The article examines constraints of the NVIDIA Hopper architecture: WGMMA instructions operate on a group of 128 threads and have a fixed row dimension of M=64. During generation, one token from each user sequence is processed at each step, so the number of rows can fall below 64, down to M=1. According to AWS, the conventional matrix arrangement then leaves a substantial portion of Tensor Cores capacity unused.
The change described transposes the matrices and reverses their order in the multiplication, resulting in a transposed output matrix. This moves the large dimension of the expert output into the first operand. According to AWS, this arrangement makes better use of the fixed computation layout and enables asynchronous data prefetching. Details are available in the source article.
Why it matters
The procedure is relevant to optimizing generation in MoE models on the NVIDIA Hopper architecture. It shows why fusing operations alone may not ensure high GPU utilization: with small token counts, the orientation of the matrices relative to the fixed instruction dimension also matters.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers get a concrete proposal for modifying matrix multiplication: by transposing the matrices and reversing the order of the operands, they can adapt expert computation to the constraints of the NVIDIA Hopper architecture.
For a business
For a company running MoE models, this provides a basis for optimizing latency and compute costs. However, the claim made by AWS does not in itself establish how much benefit the change will deliver under a specific workload.
