Apple, through new CEO John Ternus, confirms an AI strategy built around iPhone and on-device data processing
The new CEO of Apple, John Ternus, called iPhone the best AI device at the Surprise and Shine event and emphasized that Apple Intelligence prioritizes running on-device to protect user privacy.
The new CEO of Apple, John Ternus, presented the company's AI strategy at an event called “Surprise and Shine”, based on the claim that iPhone is already the best AI device available. Ternus led the event for the first time as CEO after the previous head, Tim Cook, moved into the role of executive chairman. According to Ternus, Apple does not intend to build a new type of hardware for AI, but wants to make iPhone the central point through which users interact with AI technologies.
Ternus described the ideal AI device as an “intelligent personal hub” — it should have a broad understanding of the user's personal context, always be with them, have a powerful processor for on-device AI and an internet connection for access to cloud models, a large display, high-quality cameras and microphones, long battery life, easy operation without having to learn new ways of doing things, and seamless integration with other devices, apps and services. According to Apple, iPhone best fits this description.
Ternus also emphasized differentiation from competitors on privacy: according to Apple, competitors view users' personal data as something to collect and store, while Apple Intelligence runs on-device whenever technically possible, because “trust has its limits when your data is no longer under your control”.
Why it matters
For iPhone users, the stated approach means that AI features should primarily process data locally, limiting the amount of personal information sent to third-party servers. For companies and competitors in the AI sector, this is a clearly articulated competitive distinction — Apple is betting on privacy as an argument against platforms that collect data for training or cloud processing, which may influence perceptions of the trustworthiness of individual AI ecosystems.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Apple states that Apple Intelligence runs on-device whenever possible, so iPhone users should have greater control over their personal data than with solutions that send it elsewhere for processing.
More practical updates →For a business
Apple is building its AI strategy around differentiating itself from competitors by emphasizing on-device data processing instead of data collection, which is relevant to companies that consider user data protection a competitive factor when choosing AI platforms or partners.
