Anthropic signs six-year deal worth 10 billion dollars with cloud startup Volta

confirmed by 2 independent sources

Anthropic has secured 133 MW of compute capacity from startup Volta Infra for six years for 10 billion dollars. The capacity will run on Nvidia Vera Rubin chips in a Norwegian data center operated by Bitdeer.

Anthropic has signed a six-year deal worth 10 billion dollars with cloud startup Volta Infra Holdings, Bloomberg reported. The compute capacity comes from a data center in Tydal, Norway, operated on hydroelectric power by cryptocurrency miner Bitdeer Technologies and equipped with the latest Nvidia Vera Rubin chips. According to Volta, the capacity totals 133 megawatts and will be delivered in two phases by March 2027. Shares in Bitdeer rose by 14 percent following the announcement.

Volta was founded in early 2026 by former executives at asset management company Brookfield, making it just a few months old. Alongside the deal with Anthropic, Volta raised 300 million dollars in venture capital in a round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Altimeter Capital, with Nvidia and Michael Dell also investing, valuing the company at 2.4 billion dollars. According to Volta, it has also secured 1 gigawatt of power for data centers in the near future and established a 5 billion dollar fund to help customers finance purchases of expensive AI chips. Volta is part of the Nvidia Cloud Partner program.

Anthropic has been aggressively expanding its compute capacity in recent months and already has deals with Google, Broadcom, Amazon, SpaceX and AMD. According to critics cited in the sources, interconnected dependencies between chip suppliers and AI developers could amplify losses if demand for AI falls short of expectations — the deal with Volta itself illustrates this pattern, because Nvidia is both an investor in the startup and a supplier of the chips it deploys.

What changed

Why it matters

The deal shows how major AI labs such as Anthropic are securing long-term compute capacity even from newly established suppliers to keep pace with competitors. It also demonstrates the growing interconnectedness of chip manufacturers, investors and data center operators — in the case of Volta, Nvidia is both an investor and a supplier, which, according to critics cited in the sources, increases the risk of cascading losses if demand for AI compute falls short of expectations.

What this means

01

For a business

The deal signals that securing long-term compute capacity is becoming a key strategic cost for AI companies and that supply chains in this area are increasingly interconnected and concentrated (Nvidia as both an investor and a supplier), increasing systemic risk in the industry.
