Adminer 6.0: the new version of the tool for managing PHP databases was developed mostly with assistance from Claude Opus 5
Developer Jakub Vrána released version 6.0 of the open-source tool Adminer for managing PHP databases. It contains over 130 changes, most of which he made with assistance from the Claude Opus 5 model, with an emphasis on carefully reviewing both the plan and the code.
Developer Jakub Vrána released version 6.0 of Adminer, an open-source alternative to phpMyAdmin intended for managing databases created in PHP. The software is free to download and available on GitHub.
The new version contains more than 130 changes. According to Vrána, most of them were made with assistance from the Claude Opus 5 model.
Vrána said that concerns about technical debt caused by AI assistance are justified only when a developer accepts all proposed changes without reviewing them. However, if the developer carefully reviews both the plan for the changes and the resulting generated code and negotiates adjustments at both stages, code quality improves and technical debt decreases, according to him. He compared this to pair programming with an attentive colleague and said that, during assisted development, he estimates that he makes twice as many important decisions as when programming alone.
Why it matters
The case uses a concrete open-source project to show how AI assistance can be incorporated into development without increasing technical debt – according to the author, the condition is a thorough review of both the proposal and the resulting code, rather than accepting them without thinking. For developers and companies considering a similar approach, this is a documented example of a process they can adopt.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
For developers working with AI assistance, a concrete approach to maintaining code quality is described: do not approve proposals automatically, but negotiate changes to both the plan and the generated code, which, according to the author, increases the number of considered decisions compared with programming alone.
For a business
This is an anecdotal example from one developer, not a corporate study, but it shows a concrete process that may reduce technical debt in AI-assisted development – relevant to companies considering incorporating tools such as Claude into their development workflows.
