YouTube Music introduces conversational search Ask Music and an AI podcast guide

only one source so far

YouTube Music is launching conversational search Ask Music and an AI podcast guide Your Podcast Lineup with weekly recommendations; coming soon to YouTube Music and YouTube Premium.

At the Made On YouTube event, YouTube announced two new AI features for YouTube Music. Ask Music is a conversational tool built directly into the app that, according to the source, allows users to describe the music they want in everyday language instead of classic search by song or artist name. The feature works with a catalog of over 300 million tracks, including official recordings, remixes, live performances, covers, and DJ sets. According to YouTube, a user can ask the tool to, for example, put together a mix of songs that inspired a particular track, or ask for details about how a recording was made, such as who played bass.

The second new feature is Your Podcast Lineup, an AI-generated audio guide for discovering podcasts. It will appear on the podcasts page within the YouTube Music app and, once a week, will offer a short spoken preview of recommended shows explaining why they might appeal to the user, then move directly into the recommended episodes.

According to YouTube, this is a response to the common problem that there are more podcasts than people can keep up with. The source notes that Spotify recently moved in a similar direction with its personal podcasts feature, which generates episodes based on a user's interests and input. Both new features are expected to become available soon to YouTube Music and YouTube Premium users worldwide.

What changed

Why it matters

For listeners, this means more convenient discovery of music and podcasts without needing to know exact song or artist names, and without having to browse dozens of podcasts they don't follow. For streaming services, it's another step in the competitive battle over AI personalization, which the source directly compares to Spotify's personal podcasts feature.

Two audiences, two different impacts

What this means

01

For individuals

YouTube Music and YouTube Premium users will be able to search for music and podcasts using everyday speech instead of exact titles, and will get a weekly spoken overview of recommended podcasts.

What to do After the Ask Music feature becomes available, try searching for music by description instead of an exact song or artist name.

02

For a business

Music and podcast publishers, as well as competing music services, will need to respond to the fact that content discovery on YouTube Music is now driven by a conversational AI layer instead of classic search and playlists.
