AWS has released recommended practices for managing the lifecycle of Amazon Textract service adapters across accounts
AWS has published a guide on how to manage Amazon Textract service adapters across AWS accounts using CloudFormation and Terraform templates, with adapter promotion to production without downtime and security configurations for regulated industries.
AWS has published a guide on managing the lifecycle of Amazon Textract service adapters, i.e. components that adapt text extraction from documents to specific form types. The guide addresses three main problems of production deployment: promoting trained adapters between AWS accounts, routing documents to the correct adapter, and securing them in a way that meets the requirements of regulated industries. According to AWS, the current promotion of adapters between accounts requires an AWS Support ticket and transfers only the trained model weights, not query definitions or training data.
The solution consists of externalizing adapter IDs into AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store, which, according to the company, makes it possible to update the reference to the production adapter without downtime and without redeploying the application – a change that previously required hours to days of coordination now takes on the order of seconds. The guide offers infrastructure templates for CloudFormation and Terraform and describes two approaches to adapter promotion: standard copying between accounts via an AWS Support ticket (suitable for fewer than 10 adapters with irregular updates) and a centralized hub account, where other environments access adapters via cross-account IAM roles, eliminating the need for repeated ticket handling.
For production deployment, the guide recommends routing API calls through AWS PrivateLink for network isolation, least-privilege IAM permissions, audit logging via AWS CloudTrail, and monitoring via Amazon CloudWatch. The pattern applies equally to Custom Queries, Forms, and Tables adapter types. The rest of the article, including further technical implementation details, is not available.
Why it matters
Companies processing documents (invoices, mortgage applications, insurance claims) using Amazon Textract previously had to wait for an AWS Support ticket to be resolved for every adapter promotion between a development and a production account, which slowed down the deployment of changes. The pattern described, using parametrization via SSM, allows teams to update the production configuration without touching the deployed application, which shortens the time needed to put a new version of the extraction model into operation.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers and architects working with Amazon Textract have access to concrete infrastructure templates and two proven patterns (cross-account copying vs. centralized hub) according to which they can design their own pipeline for production deployment of adapters.
For a business
For companies running document processing on Amazon Textract, the guide reduces operational overhead associated with promoting adapters between accounts (less dependency on AWS Support tickets) and offers security configurations needed to meet the requirements of regulated industries.
