Ramp AI Index: AI usage rising, US companies' API spending declining
According to the Ramp AI Index, usage has grown by approximately 50% since the July spending peak, while API spending is declining. Usage reached a record at the end of September. The analysis has a higher representation of large customers.
According to an analysis by the Ramp AI Index, US companies in the tracked sample are using more AI, but their API spending is declining. Since July, when spending peaked, usage has grown by approximately 50% and reached a record level at the end of September. According to Ramp economist Ara Kharazian, the decline in spending has been going on for an unusually long time.
Kharazian attributes the decline almost entirely to competition between OpenAI and Anthropic, price cuts for the most powerful models, and the availability of cheaper, more efficient standard and lite model tiers. In the last tracked week in September, Anthropic accounted for 51% of per-token spending and OpenAI for 44.5%. According to Kharazian, open-source models represent less than 5% of corporate spending.
The Ramp AI Index tracks transactions from more than 70 000 US companies, but the usage data comes only from a partial sample. The analysis covers only API spending and has a higher representation of large AI customers, which limits the generalizability of the results.
Why it matters
For companies planning an AI budget, the results mean that a lower API bill can accompany higher usage. Spending alone is therefore not enough to assess the extent of AI use; consumption must also be tracked. The finding applies to the tracked sample with a higher representation of large customers, not to all corporate AI spending.

What this means
For a business
When planning API costs, growth in AI usage cannot automatically be translated into equally fast growth in spending: in the tracked sample, consumption rose while spending fell.
