The Claude Opus 5.5 model is available in GitHub Copilot
The Claude Opus 5.5 model from Anthropic is now available in GitHub Copilot for Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans. According to Anthropic, it handles tasks comparably to Opus 5, but with fewer steps and tokens.
GitHub has made the Claude Opus 5.5 model from Anthropic available in GitHub Copilot. The model is designed for agentic coding, long-running agentic tasks and general knowledge work. According to Anthropic, in early testing the model handled tasks comparably to the Claude Opus 5 model, but with substantially fewer steps and tokens, and recovered more quickly from errors in multi-step tasks.
The Claude Opus 5.5 model watermarks text outputs, which, according to Anthropic, does not change the meaning, quality or readability of the output and adds no tokens or costs. Billing follows the provider's pricing under usage-based billing using balances.
The model is available to users on Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans through selection in the model picker. The rollout is gradual, so the model may not be visible immediately to all users. Administrators of Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business plans can manage access to the model through model policy in Copilot settings; new models are automatically enabled by default unless an administrator has turned off the global default setting or explicitly disabled the model.
Why it matters
For developers using GitHub Copilot, this is a new model option for agentic tasks, with potentially lower token usage compared with Opus 5 for comparable results (according to Anthropic), which affects costs under usage-based billing. Administrators of business plans control whether and to whom they make the model available through model policy.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Users on Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans can select the Claude Opus 5.5 model in the model picker for agentic coding and long-running tasks once the gradual rollout reaches them.
For a business
Companies with Copilot Business or Enterprise can make the model available to teams through model policy; with usage-based billing, fewer steps and tokens for comparable tasks may mean lower costs for agentic tasks, according to Anthropic.
