GitHub Copilot for JetBrains 1.18.0 adds AI-assisted tool approvals and planning mode for the Codex agent
GitHub has released version 1.18.0 of the GitHub Copilot plugin for JetBrains IDEs with automatic approval of low-risk agent actions, the ability to rewrite an earlier message, organizational skills/instructions, and planning mode in the Codex agent.
GitHub has released version 1.18.0 of the GitHub Copilot plugin for JetBrains IDEs. A new feature is AI-assisted tool approvals (assisted approvals), currently in public preview for Copilot agent sessions: low-risk tool actions are approved automatically, while higher-risk actions continue to require a user decision. Users can also edit a previously sent message in an agent session — according to the company, Copilot restores both the conversation and the file changes to the state before that message and continues from there.
Both local and Copilot agent sessions now support organizational and enterprise skills and organization-managed custom instructions, allowing shared practices and instructions to be applied in both types of sessions. The Codex agent has gained a planning mode in which the plan can be reviewed, edited, or approved before implementation.
The plugin also introduces persistent settings for individual tools on MCP servers in Copilot agent sessions, the ability to independently enable or disable the built-in GitHub MCP Server (enabled by default) without affecting manually configured MCP servers, and a new toggle for displaying chat alongside the sessions panel in the tool window. The update also fixes inline chat reliability, issues with starting Codex sessions, and behavior across multiple project windows.
Why it matters
For developers working in JetBrains IDEs, AI-assisted approvals reduce the number of interruptions during routine, low-risk agent steps, and planning mode in the Codex agent provides the option to review the approach before code changes are made. For organizations, central management of skills and custom instructions makes it possible to enforce consistent workflows across teams using Copilot agent sessions.
Two audiences, two different impacts
What this means
For individuals
Developers using JetBrains IDEs with GitHub Copilot will get fewer approval interruptions for low-risk agent actions, the ability to return to an earlier message in the conversation, and the option to review a plan before the Codex agent starts making changes.
For a business
Organizations using GitHub Copilot can now centrally manage shared skills and organization-controlled custom instructions across both Copilot agent sessions and local sessions, making it easier to enforce consistent practices across teams.
