According to estimates from Apptopia, in its first 12 days the Muse app from Meta had more downloads (1.8 million on iOS in the USA/Canada vs. 1.3 million for ChatGPT) and daily active users (642 000 vs. 231 000 in the USA) than ChatGPT in the comparable period.

According to estimates from Apptopia, the Muse app from Meta achieved higher adoption in its first 12 days on the market than the ChatGPT app did in the comparable period after its launch. Comparing only iOS data for the USA and Canada (a methodology chosen because of the different launch strategies of the two apps), Muse had 1.8 million downloads versus 1.3 million for ChatGPT. Muse is available on both iOS and Android, while ChatGPT was available globally at launch, but only on iOS.

Muse reached a total of 2.8 million installations worldwide in its first 12 days. According to Apptopia, it had 642 000 daily active users in the USA versus 231 000 for ChatGPT in the comparable period; when comparing only iOS users, the figure for Muse was 359 000. Meanwhile, the app moved from second to first place in the US App Store ranking, overtaking ChatGPT — according to data from Appfigures, Muse had surpassed 1 million downloads.

Apptopia cautions that these are third-party estimates without direct access to internal figures from Meta. Meta has not yet publicly shared its own figures on Muse adoption. According to data from Apptopia, over 95 % of Muse users also use Facebook and 63 % use Instagram, indicating the role of cross-promotion through these platforms and WhatsApp — Meta previously used a similar strategy for the Threads app, which now has over 500 million users.

What changed

Why it matters

The data indicates that distribution through Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp enables Meta to quickly attract user numbers for a new AI app comparable to or higher than those ChatGPT had in its early days — this is a third-party estimate, not official figures from Meta, but it signals a shift in the competitive balance in the consumer AI app market that is relevant to companies monitoring this segment.
